I have had (and still do sometimes) the same problem with my rock guards. The solution that worked for me is to WD 40 the threads of the thumbscrews really good, and then I apply a little sideways pressure on the screw while tightening to put the back side in a bind. I still have to reWD-40 the threads every once in a while to maintain the slick threads.
