I think our mattress topper on our bed at home would bottom out. We got it at Costco a couple years ago, and love it, but I think it might not keep you off the plywood if used by itself.

I hesitate to mention this in a thread talking about a high tech memory foam 4" mattress topper, but... Last summer we were camping in Chincoteague and found a $10 3/4" cheapo egg-crate foam mattress topper at the Family Dollar store. It is really a great improvement, just enough to soften the standard TM mattress a little, and not thick enough to be a problem with clearance when the shell comes down!
