We use a 6" air mattress and 3" memory foam topper that we got from Costco. It is unbelievably comfortable and we don't have to remove the topper to fold down.

I plumbed an in inflater tube to the edge of the bed so that I don't have to stretch to attach the electric inflater. When we get ready to fold down, we make the bed, unscrew the air-fill cap and the thing deflates in seconds, ready to fold down.

The down side is, we use a 2-step step ladder to get in bed. It's a lot more sturdy than that plastic step.
