My TM has a 17-digit VIN, just like a car.
The TM VIN can be found on at least three locations on the trailer. On a plate riveted to the A-frame, on a sticker on the left sidewall (outside), and on a sticker somewhere inside (I've forgotten exactly where). You need to get back to the owner and ask him to re-check.
Probably easier? Assuming the trailer is currently registered, the VIN will appear on the registration. He can get it from there.
