AJ’s Getaway - Heber, AZ
A few years ago, a young couple had a dream - to build a beautiful campground in the pines of north-central Arizona. The couple - AJ, Machelle, and their daughter Jenna - set the project in motion, and Machelle started a blog describing the steps in the creation. Many of us followed the blog as the campground slowly came to life. Recently, my wife and I spent a night there, and it quickly became our favorite campground.
AJ’s Getaway brings you to several thousand acres of the Tonto National Forest, and within driving distance of a lot more. At about 6,000 feet, it is cool when the Phoenix area is HOT. It is a basecamp for hiking, 4-wheeling, and exploring on miles of forest service trails and roads.
The campground has 43 beautiful campsites distributed in the pines. Every site is a long pull-through, level, dry, well graveled, and set well apart from its neighbors. All sites have 30 amp AND 50 amp electric service, plus water and sewer. Many sites are carpeted with wildflowers, which AJ insists are natural, not planted. A welcome idea for camping with friends is the inclusion of “buddy sites” - two (or three) sites arranged so that your RV and your buddy’s RV face each other, with fire rings and picnic tables between. Wildlife of all kinds is common. We had a nesting pair of Western bluebirds not far from us. The flashy male landed on our towing mirror, then spent half an hour attempting to drive away his “rival”, pecking at the other bird in the mirror.
AJ, Machelle, and Jenna are wonderful hosts. You will love your experience at The Hideaway.
BTW, I am in no way connected to these folks. I just love their campground.
