Texas_Camper (Leon) has given a pretty good summary. Follow it, and you will never go wrong.

Incidentally, returning to your original post. The thing you should NEVER DO is activate the ELECTRIC heating element in your water heater before it is filled with water. The electric heating element will burn out almost instantly if it is not immersed in water when the power hits it. With the gas heater, you probably have a bit longer - but not long, I bet. Anyone know how long? Thirty seconds?

Since your TM is a 96 model, your heater may not have an electric element, assuming your water heater is original.

Nope. None of that new fangled electric stuff for us. Gotta go out there and fire it up yourself....which we did with no problem.
Great first trip. My dogs were a little freaked that this wasn't the normal home away from home (our teeny tiny tent trailer). The coolest part was that our bed is too high for them to jump up on so the bedding stays cleaner..woo hoo! We're of again next weekend!
Thanks for all the help.
