I should have mentioned the care needed in using silicone RTV on wires. Some RTV's smell like vinegar, because they have acetic acid as part of their formula. As a general statement, acid on copper wires is not a good idea. I don't know if the acetic acid in those RTVs hangs around long enough to do any harm. But discretion is the better part of valor, as they say.

I can't say I have noticed a problem using the rtv silicon to seal boat trailer tail light connections. Usually the tail lights themselves fail way before the splice does. But then I never thought about what you mention Bill.

These connectors are probably worth a thought too. They are quick and filled with electrical grease. They have been using the smaller version of these for telephone wire for years and I never heard of any failing.
