Bruce, I re-read your post about the Dead Indian Memorial Road, and yes, you were using engine braking. I plotted the route on OsmAnd, especially the steep descent.

Yup, this is a road to avoid when towing!

Sorry, the screen shots are too hard to read accurately. Something is converting them to jpg and it's not pretty!

Yeah, it's really steep and to be avoided. Might even be too steep to drive it uphill without overheating.

Perhaps inexperience was an element too. But I found it necessary to stop for 20 minutes to cool down the brakes, after I felt they were not working as well as usual. Someone who didn't notice that in time could get in trouble.

The confidence you will feel is worth it, all by itself.

I have thought about getting one of these for years because of the ability to get transmission nil temperature. They run about 160 USD now, but amazon.ca actually had it for 160 canadian! I didn't hesitate because that works out to about 120 USD or so.

Now, Bill, you had a similar Explorer to ours. I tried it out and it worked well, except I couldn't release the parking brake. Ford had the great wisdom to put the OBD connecter immediately in front of the release handle so I can't leave it connected if I use the parking brake.

We didn't experience that problem with our Explorers. I think you could move (or re-orient) the OBD connector. Or, for $7, you can get an OBD extension cable from Amazon. That might solve the problem.

It's not a problem of needing an extension. The plug of the Scanguage physically blocks the parking brake release handle.

I might have to relocate the OBD connector.

I understand. But some of the extension cables have a very thin plug with a side-exit cable. If you plug this into the OBD port, the parking brake handle might clear it. Then you could plug the Scan Gauge into the other end of the extension with no clearance issues.

Ah, that should work. I didn't even to think to look for such a cable. I have it set up on the Tahoe and the instant and average fuel economy is quite useful.

It seems some adapters will work, others will not. I posted the question here:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/.../#post-3681397

I believe you had an 07 Explorer which would have been almost identical to my 08. Did yours have an auto release on your parking brake? Or did you just have a 90 adapter that worked? I'm just curious at this point.

Larry -

My Explorers (both of them, 2002 and 2007) must have had a somewhat different physical layout in that area. Neither had an auto-releaser, but neither of them had the interference problem you are experiencing.

At the time I bought my gauge, there were only two OBD-II gauges on the market - the Scan Gauge and the Aeroforce Interceptor. Although it was more expensive, I bought the Interceptor because I considered it (and still do) superior to the Scan Gauge. Today there are many OBD-II gauges available, and the term "scan gauge" has come to refer generically to the entire market, much as "Xerox" has come to refer to any and all copiers. I do not recall that my Interceptor had a right-angle cable, though.
