Default How long should it take to fill 40 gallons of fresh water?

When I fill up my fresh water, every 3 minutes or so I get a "burp" which sends water and air out the port, after which it begins accepting water again for 3 more minutes. I'm using a 9 inch filling extension hose which has a 45 degree diagonal cut, which I stick down into the fill water opening. The filling hose should help air to get around the water, but I don't think it's working the way it should. The tank needs to "burp" since it cant displace the air, and every 3 minutes sends water and air back out the fill hole.

I know there is a small screen air hole right above the water hole. Could it be that that is plugged? Or is there a common fix for this "burping" back water and air. Right now, I have to turn my water flow way down, so that it fills my 40 gallon tank in about 25 minutes. This wouldn't be good if I have to do it at a campground and others are waiting...

Let me know if there are any known fixes for my problem.

Possibly check to see if your vent hose is not venting, should be allowing the air to exit as water enters. Depenging on pressure a tank should fill in five minutes at least mine will.

Time to fill depends on the hose diameter and line pressure. 1/2" hose at 60psi pretty quick. 10 psi & 1/4" hose, not so, & siphoning from a bucket takes a while.

I would definitely check for a clog in that vent hose. Not sure about SoCal area, but up north here spiders get to be a problem. A friend of mine has had issues with spiders making webs/nests in the gass line for her water heat. Remove web and works like a champ.

Or the vent hose could be folded or kinked. Worth checking. But yes, it should vent, and clearly it is not.

I'm with Bill it's the vet hose. I would also check to see if the vent hose has a dip and is filling with water from the splashing and then you get burp to clear it???

Is there a tool to clear the vent pipe/hose? does anyone know what it looks like? can i use a coat hanger or something similar to clear out the obstruction?

Any thoughts?

Have you confirmed there is not a crimp in the vent hose? Best to look, before taking the screen off, and running something down the vent. It may bend enough in your installation to make it seem clogged when running a wire through it, when it is only a bend.

If there is no crimp, I would not run anything through the hose, as it would push it into the tank. Not good, as now you have contaminant in the tank.

I would take the hose off, clean it out, then put it back on (if you have confirmed there is no crimp).

PeterOC,

The clear tube on top of the larger white/green flex tube is the vent line on my 40gal tank. Yours should be similar. You should be able to see if it's plugged and if not remove it to do a better inspection of it.
