Cindy, the older model stoves did not have the spark starter, (or piezo igniter in the manual). One did have to use a match, but with the current stoves, you can follow the manufacturer's instructions. You still have to use a match to light the oven pilot light.
I, too, am a bit leary around propane, but have had no trouble lighting our stove with the igniter.
