Default Disc Brakes?

I was scanning the Dexter site, and I saw this and my eyes bugged out I think.

Has anyone done this yet? I like the concept A LOT! The idea of disc brakes on the TM is one that I have often thought about.

Thoughts??

Great concept...especially for someone like me who frequently tows over steep and long mountain grades. Kinda pricey though...about $200 each side for the drum-to-disk conversion kits and another $800 for the electric to hydraulic actuator for a total of $1200. So I'm not convinced there's enough bang for the buck...my current drum brakes have been adequate so far.

Looks like a great idea, but I agree with Ray. The cost is a bit high. My electric drums have been working fine. Perhaps this could be an option when ordering a new unit from the factory.

Would these be sturdy enough for the TM? They are rated at 3500#. Is that per side/axle?

I interpret the rating as per axle. Dexter rates the axle on the 2720 series and 2619 at 3500 lbs (as well, IIRC, each axle on a 3326) so the 3500 conversion kits (one left, one right) should be heavy duty enough for those models. If you click the green "order disk brake kits online" button, you'll find that although the 3500 lb kit is the one featured, there are also 6K and 8K kits. The 6K kit should be sufficient for the axle on either the 3023 or 3124.

Since this is a retrofit kit, I would imagine you need an exact match fit to your axle. In other words, you probably can't put a 6K kit on a 3500 pound axle - or vice versa. Bolts wouldn't line up, pieces would be the wrong size, etc.

I would also imagine that the retrofit kit would be matched to the axle in terms of carrying and braking capacity. Though I have no love for Dexter, I can't imagine that they would sell you a kit that would downgrade the braking capacity of the axle.

Before ordering, I would certainly confirm the exact intent with Dexter.

Just my guess ...
