Default Flash flooding kiils campers in western Arkansas

CNN is reporting that the Little Missouri River has flash flooded a campground, rising from 3 ft. to over 20 ft. in 12 hours in western Arkansas. The campground is a Forest Service area called the Albert Pike Campground in Montgomery County. Early reports are that 12 are dead but some estimates were that over 300 people were camping in the area.

I know nothing about that area, but apparently it is remote and rescue crews are still enroute to help victims.

If you know people camping in that area you may wish to contact them, if mobile phones work out there.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those campers. They are showing pictures on the news- one trailer looks like a Trailmanor. Horrible situation.

Yes, it hit the Albert Pike campground area hard. There have been 18 deaths confirmed so far, with search efforts still underway. We had a local Boy Scout group from our area there when it happened, but luckily they got to higher ground and were all safe.

One of the problems with the search effort, is they are not even sure who is missing. It was a self-reporting check-in area, and the box with the names got washed out in the flash flood. Some people drive in....but others canoe into it.

Our local geocaching group had already been planning a trip to that same spot, but we hadn't planned on camping there. Because of this planned trip, we were monitoring the caddo and little missouri river levels there. Here is a link, where everyone can see just how fast it flashed flooded. It went from 5 feet to 25 feet in just a few hours.

It's a terrible thing, and should make us all aware of what can happen ...... especially with just one road out.
