This statement is an over-stated generalization. Whether or not you use OD while towing depends on many factors: primarily the ratio of towing weight to the towing capacity of the vehicle; the terrain you are towing on, flat or hilly; cross-wind or head-wind; etc. Tow with a vehicle that has the "factory installed tow package" to ensure that you have the proper transmission and radiator cooling capacity for towing up to the recommended weight for your vehicle. However you tow, make sure you follow the vehicle manufacturers recommendations for servicing the transmission (oil and filter changes).
I've towed many 10's of thousands of miles and use OD whenever possible. I DO NOT let the automatic transmission "hunt" for the right gear. If it starts to hunt, I turn the OD off until the terrain allows it to tow properly in OD.
I turn off the OD more now, towing a full-size TT than when I was towing our TM.
The bottom line? Understand your tow vehicle's capabilities and use it wisely.
