I ran #10 wire, and it worked fine. Fused both ends, a cutoff relay added, and one connector (at the hitch, of course). I was trying to solve the problem in which running the refrig on the road kills the TM battery. It worked. No reason not to go to #8 except cost, but for me it was not necessary.
FWIW, I found the least expensive way to go was to wait until Lowes had a sale on a 50-foot #10 extension cord (less than $1 a foot, as I recall), and buy it. Cut the connectors off both ends, and insert a new connector in the middle (at the hitch). This gave me a flexible cord (do not use ROMEX!) in a weatherproof abrasion-resistant cover, easy to mount.

By the way, it is a good idea to avoid asking two unrelated questions in the same post. The answers tend to get intertwined, and it is harder to Search for the topic later. I moved the Tires half of you post to the Tires forum.
