Grand Canyon to Zion: Best Route?
We are visiting Grand Canyon and Zion National Park in late May. Does anyone have information on the best route to pull a TM from Grand Canyon (South Rim) to Zion? We would welcome any other useful advice on visiting Grand Canyon and Zion. Thanks!

Depends on where you want to end up. Last time we did it, we were headed for a campground just outside the west (south) entrance to Zion, and somehow ended up at the east entrance. Duh, that's not good! So we paid the extra-wide-vehicle fee to get guided in one side and out the other. Certainly eats up time!

Bill - Do you happen to remember the amount of the fee and what you had to do in advance (if anything) to "get guided"? We are probably going to be doing that very same thing mid-May, traveling from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to Watchman Campground in Zion's. Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Google maps says...
According to Google maps, the best route is through Page AZ and then Kanab UT on Hwy 89 then the last stretch to Zion's on Hwy 9. I've never been over the Hwy 9 route but also plan to travel that direction in May as well.
The alternative is a very long trip by way of Lake Mead near Las Vegas. If someone has a different route, I'd love to hear about it also.
Here's a link to the map route.

Check the Zion NPS web site. They have all the info you need. I wonder if the TM is wide enough to require an escort. But your brakes better be in fine shape...there is a killer downhill on the west end of the long tunnel! The Watchman Campground does not have full hookups, most have none. There is a decent campground in Springdale with full hookups, about a half mile from Zion NP. And an excellent restaurant across the street in the motel!!!

NPS site
Thanks for the tip, Scott. The NPS web site has the info on this page.
$15.00 fee
Escort required for vehicles wider than 7'10" or higher than 11'4"
Vehicles over 13'1" tall are prohibited

I've been on that route several times, but with a popup. I don't know of any other reasonably direct route other than Hwy 89. North-South routes are limited in that part of the world.

Route
Two years ago we were there but did it the oppisite way. This was our experience. From Grand Canyon Rt. 89 to Page. Camp, West of Page on Lake Powell (beautiful). If you have time take day trip to 4 Corners & Monument Valley (well worth the trip). From Page we stayed at the KOA in Glendale (nice place). Can reach both Zion & Bryce Canyon on day trips. Enjoy.

Bryce has a great campground. No utilities of course but a fantastic site. So I wouldn't miss that. Zion campground is OK, it's on the river but it is a lot hotter. The Bryce campground is at 9400 feet IIRC.

Kanab Utah
As a kid, I spent many summers in Kanab, Utah visiting my Grandmother. It is centrally located to so many National Parks and beautiful sights, Zion in 45 minutes away, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce about 80 miles away in opposite directions.
I've never stayed at any RV Parks there, but I found this link for you: http://www.kanabrvcorral.com/
Here's more info on Kanab itself: http://kanab.utah.gov/ and http://www.visitkanab.info/
Have a great trip!
