Default 2020 TM 2720 Grease Bearings Question

I have the newer wheel style as shown and have been trying to see if I can grease the bearings without removing the wheel. So far I haven’t been able to remove the dust cap and it appears that I’ll have to remove the lugs and wheel to get behind the cap. Or my second option is to have my service guy grease the bearings and check/adjust the brakes. Has anyone had experience with this style wheel and bearings set before I remove it. Let me know. Thanks

I'm not familiar with that particular wheel style, and so I can't give you a first hand account, but I'm guessing that cap is a plastic decorative cap that should come off without removing the wheel. And then likely, under that is a metal cap, much more utilitarian looking, and which provides actual protection to the bearings. Under that cap is also likely to be the EZ Lube fitting, to which a grease gun would attach and allow you to lubricate the bearings. Such a lube fitting is common on trailers, and meant to be regularly accessed in some cases, and so any wheel manufacturer that would circumvent that design wouldn't be bought by OEM manufacturers having a wheel hub that includes such a lube fitting.

On the other hand, I doubt it is necessary to lube the bearings with a 2020 model.

I was sad to find out the hard way that removing that center decorative cap did not give me adequate space to remove the rubber seal and access the zerk (if you choose to do it that way, not everyone does). Who'da thunk?

This cap ‘sounds’ metal and I’ve tried to untorqued it by hand, and it doesn’t budge. Tapping with a rubber mallet doesn’t have any affect but I’ll try it again tomorrow if you think it should be removeable. Thanks for the suggestions.

Small edit. You can remove the decorative central disk, and there is space (barely) to get a grease gun nozzle to the zerk. However, as you inject new grease through the zerk, the old grease is pushed out around the rim of the hub, and collects in the cylindrical hub cover. And the space around the disk is too small to let you get at it to clean it out as it collects. You don't really want to run down the road with that hub full of old grease - it will slop all over the wheel. Bottom line - the only way to get the grease out is to remove the wheel and push that cylindrical hub cover out the back.
