Installed Thetford Vent

We installed the Thetford vent accessory to the Electra Magic toilet. It was about $35 shipped and took an hour to install. Some minor dimpling was necessary to the interior wall to expose the threads of the vent shank for mounting the washer and nut. A 5/8 circle bit was used to cut a hole in the wall. The exterior vent is about the size of a quarter and sticks out about one half inch at the opening. It does not obstruct anything when opening and closing.
Our TM is 10 years old and had no vent except the window. This was not a 100 per cent fix but for the time and money it was a worth while improvement.

That's a nice installation. Do I understand you to say that the chrome vent hood plus all the other rubber parts and piping came from Thetford as a kit? Nice find!

Yes, all the parts and tubing are included. All that was required was the drill, a screw driver and a pair of plyers for pinching the hose clamps!
It came with about 3 ft of hose. I was tempted to test it by runniing the hose past the bathroom wall and poking it out under the velcro flap by the kitchen sink to see if it worked before drilling a hole in the wall but my husband was so sure that it would be an improvement that he just went ahead and installed it ..and he was right.

I got it directly through Thetford. I stumbled upon it on their web site. Don't remember how. It wasn't so easy to find. I had them send me a picture of it to see if it would work for the TM since it is primarily for marine use. I ordered it by phone.

I was reading through your post on the thetford vent you posted back in 2005 and was wondering if you can tell me your overall expierience with the device... do you think this is a worth while project? does it do what its name implies? vents toilet gases? lastly how well does it vent if you could rate it 1-10... 10 being the best. thanks

About a year ago I was unable to find these parts. I was told they don’t make them anymore. Before you go to too much trouble figuring out how to do it you might check around and see if they are available now.

I made venting out of PCV pipe and put in a little fan called the Lil Stanker. I have found that even without the fan running there seems to be odor coming out of the venting and suspect that that might be all that is needed. ELM-JLM used a vent cap called the Cyclone that you can get from Camping World and went directly out the wall behind the toilet. To use the Lil Stanker you need to vent under the sink making it a bit more of a project but it has eliminated all orders for us.

agrrr.... leave it to thetford to take away a good thing. called them and just as you said its no longer available. Looked at your pictures... I immagine that you remove the vent when you fold up. what do you do with the pipe? do you store it in the hallway? lastly that stinker fan you mentioned its installed under the sink? could you elaborate a little on that? thanks again.

manorlife - if you spend a little time searching, you may find a retailer that still has some in stock. Looks like you're looking for Thetford part #05223 (see attached installation instructions), and it shows in stock here:

If you can't find it domestically, I know the Electra Magic is far more popular in Europe and Australia. I'd check there next, as shipping wouldn't be too obscene for such a small part (especially from Europe).
