Good point. Newer 4Runners don't offer a V8. So the 4L V6, 4WD is what I am asking about. thanks.

The 4L in the 2004+ 4runners, fjc and taco has no problem pulling a Tm. the late model one has even more power. It does well even across 12k ft passes.

I have been pulling our TM with a 02 4Runner and the combination works very well. Very consistent 15-17 MPG will towing. I just wish the 4Runner had a larger gas tank.

04 v8
We have used an 04 V8 4runner for a few years and could not be happier with it, even at 175,000 miles. Comfortable, reliable, and decent gas mileage.

We bought our 2006 V8 4Runner to tow our 3326 King (07) and have pulled it from Minneapolis out to Southern Utah across the TX panhandle, thru New Mexico and up the scenic Hwy north of Flagstaff AZ. Returned via Denver over the 12,000 ft. summit. We average between 12 and 15 mpg.
Very satisfied,
Good Luck and joy. Buying used works really good for us.

Tow with a 2008 4Runner with the V-6, and I've been up to Mt. Rushmore, over multiple mountain passes and up to Leadville CO multiple times. I love my 4Runner and would highly recommend it. I've seen a couple articles stating that Toyota is planning to discontinue the 4Runner, and I will be very disappointed if that is true.

we are looking to purchase a vehicle for towing a trailer.the 4runner type vehicle seems under-sized to safely pull a 3500 to 4000 pound trailer. we have driven small to mid size suvs and trucks and they just don't feel substantial enough. recently watched a newer tacoma pulling a small trailer try to stop to avoid an accident. the trailer jack knifed and was hit by a box truck. i think a larger vehicle would have been able to stop in time. we're planning on looking at full size suvs and pickups next. once we have a vehicle to tow with, we will be looking to buy a trailmanor.

You're right that it's not about TOWING so much as it is about STOPPING with your tow vehicle. However in the situation you saw, even a larger tow vehicle could have a trailer jackknife behind it in an emergency stop...if the trailer had no brakes or they were not adjusted correctly. Someone will correct me if I'm off on this, but I understand that if the trailer brakes are properly adjusted, in most cases the trailer should stop in a straight line as its brakes are applied at the same time as the vehicle's. I've tested mine on a straight empty road, jamming on them nearly full-force and have never had a sign of jackknifing. Icy or wet roads though, anything can happen. I'm 100% satisfied with my 2005 v8 4Runner as a tow vehicle (purchased like new with 70,000 miles, now at 125,000) and would buy another 4Runner when needed (maybe when I get to 200,000!) Mine is rated for 7000 lbs. with the V8 engine and 4WD, but I'm not sure about towing capacity for new models.
