Default Another "what is this?" thread...

Hi all,

I've been enjoying cleaning and "getting to know" our new to us Trailmanor in preparation for our first scheduled weekend trip in May. I am attaching two photos and curious to know what this is. It appears to be a vent of some sort on the back right exterior and it looks to be capped off in the storage area under the rear bed. Perhaps this would be for some sort of option that wasn't included when originally purchased? Perhaps it is included in the event one chose to install electronics needing venting?

Thanks,

John

Hmm. Interesting. On the right, the entry door side. I can't find any picture of a 3023 that shows anything at that location. It looks like a battery vent - what is the OD of the tube inside the compartment? The mystery to me is why the nice neat hole in the sidewall is cut so much bigger than the pipe that goes through it. How big is the hole?

Perhaps the owner installed extra batteries, perhaps for a solar power system, and this is the vent for the extra batteries? Any plugged screwholes on the outside of the roof, where panels would have been screwed down?

I'm no help. Sorry

Bill

Thanks for the feedback, Bill. I plan to open it up this weekend to sanitize the water system and will measure the diameter of the tube and hole then. I am certain that the previous owners never had a solar system as they said they almost always used electric hook-ups. In fact, the battery was dead and dated March 2010 and all of the contacts were very corroded...not sure if they had ever been maintained. I am operating under the presumption that this must have been an added option for potential venting.

Okay, you saw the battery. Was it in the same location as that vent?

If so, it should have been connected directly to the battery box.

If not, that vent appears to be something different. Based on your previous answer, it seems to be unrelated to the battery.

It is possible that some one at the factory accidentally made a hole for the battery, then blocked it off. Or, a previous owner moved the battery to a new location. Many owners move the battery to the tongue for easier maintenance.

(I have left mine where it is, but remove it and store it in my garage over the winter.)

EDIT:
As I checked several images of the 3023, I realize that that vent is in the "interior" storage side. That hole is very nicely cut, but I also don't see any images even online that show a vent in that location. This leads me to think the hole may have been drilled by accident at the factory. If that was an aftermarket drilled hole, some one took great care to do a neat job. Even a hole saw wouldn't have made such a neat hole.

I bet it is this thing, which I found at etrailer.com. I have no idea why it was there, but it looks like a factory installation.
Valterra RV Battery Box Vent with Cover - 1-3/4" Hose Opening - White Cover
It explains the oversize hole.

Yep...that looks pretty much like it. It's hard to get my head into the storage area to see straight at the tape measure. I was thinking about 2 inches in diameter, but 1 3/4 is likely. I probably won't ever put a battery or electronics in there, but it is nice to have the option, I guess.
