Thanks for the replies. Bill the hitch ball never touched the ground, I just didn't remove it for this short trial. I think if I flip the plate and take off that extra nut, the height won't cause interference with the gas tank and fenders. Won't know till I try it. Cactusking I had the plate fabricated at a local welding shop. It has been several years ago, but I don't remember it being very expensive. BTW, the John Deere is a hydrostatic transmission, but seems to work fine. Here is a different angle view of the hitch plate.
