Sounds to me like you have burned out the electric element. It happens if you apply power to the water heater when it is empty - i.e., no water in the tank. And it happens very quickly. Fortunately a new element is not expensive, and is easy to install, although you will need to buy a special wrench. Take a look at this article in the

If your TM is more than 3 or 4 years old, you might want to replace the anode rod at the same time. The process is similar to replacing the heating element, although the wrench is a different size.
Incidentally, if you are a new owner, you will find a lot of good information in the Technical Library. It is worth at least scanning down through the titles.
