Electric brake adjustment
Ok, I got my new electric brakes and hubs all installed, these are the never adjust brakes dexter brand. What is the initial adjustment ? I tightened the adjuster to where I can get one revolution out of the tire when giving it a push with my hand while jacked up. However when I took it out for a road test it seems like they are not braking enough/ any thoughts or a different way to first adjust them.

I know with car drums, you adjust them until they drag them back off one or two clicks... You may also need to adjust your brake controller settings for new brakes?

Craig,
Read Bill's post #13 http://www.trailmanorowners.com/foru...+brakes&page=2
He explains the process of adjusting the never-adjust-brakes installed on his trailer.

Agree, adjust until they start to drag and back off 1-2 clicks.
Did you clean off the machine oil off the new drums with brake cleaner?
You need to break in the brakes. You need to go about 30 stops. Stopping very slowly from about 30 mph, taking 20 to 30 seconds to come to a stop.
Also electric brakes take about 2-3 miles to warm up and do not brake well when they are cold.
You may need to turn up your brake controller. New shoes need to wear into the drum shape. They will make very good contact with the leading and trailing edges and the center has less contact pressure until they wear in.

This might be some of the best advice I've seen.
The rule for tightening the shoes until they contact then backing them off two clicks is standard practice. Where I have trouble is deciding how tight is "contacting". When I dud this, I didn't tighten it enough. I think I found that tightening the shoes so the wheel would spin a half turn before stopping was about right. Then I'd back it off 2 notches.
It seems that the Never-adjust brakes are more forgiving for the initial adjustment, but it would take some time for them to self adjust properly. from what I'm reading from Bill, they seem to work better then car self adjusting drum brakes.

I installed them on our last TM. It was very nice. Once they broke in I never had to adjust my gain. Where with the manual adjusters as time went on after I had adjusted them, I was turn up the gain for the wear of the shoes since the last adjustment.
Yes as time go's they will become adjusted spot on. But you must start with them adjusted near to correct. If there is to much slack the adjusters will not turn the adjuster wheel. The self adjusters are slack adjuster and work within a slack range.
PS etrailer or maybe it was dexter has a very good video for adjusting the first time for the self adjusters.

Thanks everyone, New hub drum was all cleaned with break klean and after a few stop and go's it is getting better, I guess like said above, just time to wear in the shoes to the drum. So thanks again.

brake adjustment problem
When adjusting the brakes, I followed directions and turned the star wheel teeth up (screwdriver handle toward the ground) until the tire was difficult to turn. Suddenly it seems to have seize up--can't turn the wheel at all and star adjustment wheel wont turn. Busted a couple knuckles trying to turn it!! Any ideas on what happened???

If they are self adjusters. You need a second tools to release the lock on the adjuster.. Either puts up or down on the lock. I can't rember, I always look at them before I install to know how to unlock the lock.
They are designed to only alow the adjustment wheel to move in one direction, unless you use a second tool to unlock it while you use a tool to turn the adjustment wheel. Pita, same as auto drum brakes self adjuster.

Yep..it seems one of the pawls has gotten behind the star wheel and wont let it turn in the direction its supposed to turn freely...gonna have to pull the drum off if that's possible with the brakes engaged!!
