If you hover over the links, you'll see the diffrerence.
the shortened link still contains the full URL where the text does not, only the 3 dots.

How do you start a new message and post it? All I can see to do is reply to someone's already posted article and this is inappropriate

Big, click on the subject thread and on the upper left area, you should see a blue bar labeled new thread. Click that and you can add a title and go from there.
