The macerator itself acts like a check valve (mine does at least) - it doesn't back-flow out of the macerator. I just close the gate valve on the trailer, disconnect the macerator and raise it above the level of the tote (or the toilet for example) before I disconnect the hose from it. I have only used it to empty into my toilet once. And then I also was emptying the grey tank, and rinsing both out. So there was minimal nastiness involved. You could put a ball-valve on the hose if you wanted to. I haven't had to do that yet, but I suppose it isn't a bad idea. The 1" hose I have is only 12' long - enough to get from the waste valves to the campsite sewer. I have an additional 10' to attach to it if I need a longer run. But so far, that 10-12' has been plenty.
