A poor man’s Sealand alternative

Dudeabides, great job! How many flushes do you think that setup will hold? I'd like to do the same but am concerned for the length of time between emptying.

Hard to say, we haven't used it yet. Would be very similar to the Sealand, I haven't looked in those threads to see how often they are being emptied. For me it's a non-issue since we almost always have full hookups and I have a toter for the rare times we don't.

We empty our SeaLand twice as often as we did the Thetford but that’s because we actually use it as opposed to emergency use only. The biggest thing about capacity is how long you hold the pedal. You can do a quick flush or a longer flush when needed.

First time using the new setup, we were camping for 5 days. Had a couple extra kids with us, so 7 people total. Campground had nice bathrooms so no #2 allowed. It does fill quickly, I emptied daily. However, common sense would tell you that since the holding tank is small. Important for me was zero smell! Zero regrets going with this setup.

This is a very clever way of getting this type of set up. If you're looking less expensive, many of us have opted to use a Curve, which is a cassette-type set up. Simpler to implement and less cost, but you can't hook up to an external drain. There are threads on it if you're interested.

I like the concept but for one question. Won't the placement of the vent trap smells inside the upper shell when on the road or storage?

There’s a chance it could...but considering the recirc toilet it replaced doesn’t vent at all I’m thinking it’s still an improvement.

I recently completed my Poor Man's Sealand Alternative, largely following the advice of Dudeabides. One difference is that I added about 6 Gallons of capacity by doing the 3" -line-around-the-gray-tank-mod. All in all, I should have about 14 gal. black water capacity.

Also, instead of trimming the flange on the right side of the tank, I opened up the wall under the shower, and pushed the tank partially under there. It achieved the same end but with less tank cutting.

I strongly considered adding pipe for extra capacity, and still may. I figured since I was using rubber fittings to put it all back together that I could wait to see if I really needed it. Definitely would be a worthy addition if you’re aren’t on full hookups.
