About once or twice a year we get a freeze in North Florida...we have our own well so we just put a heating pad on the pump to the well and plug it in. This might work for the water heater if you have electricity.

Drinking water
This is last point I will make about this off topic discussion. There is a huge difference between rinsing your dishes with hot water from the tap, and drinking and cooking with it.

I've never heard of giardia in tap water in the US and certanly never heard that hot water heaters are a breeding ground for it. I thnk a properly maintained TM plumbing system should be able to hold perfetly potable water. Somehow there just aren't enough plastic water bottles in this world to convince me that all my drinking water must come from one.
