Won't work (in most cases).
The adjusting screws attempt to vary the tilt of the angled bar ends, creating more or less torque within the bars. But when the bent portions have been pressed all the way up, hitting the top of the containing square box container, "adding a wedge" or using a longer bolt won't help: You can't drive the end through the body of the square.
