DC Converter

Has anyone ever replaced a DC Converter in the TM ? If so is it just a plugin or what is the deal?

Lots of us have replaced our converters.

What year and model TM do you have?

This is a pic of my old converter......only the lower portion of this piece of equipment is the actual "converter" part. The rest of it your your power distribution center:


I (and others) pulled out the actual "Converter " part and installed a much more sofisticated "Progressive Dynamics 9245 Converter":

I originally installed the new converter in the old converter space:


However, I was not happy with it there. I pulled it out and installed it on the front of the trailer, closer to the batteries. That gives the converter maximum effifiency and better cooling. If you have a slide-out model TM, the batteries are in the back and the converter could also be easily mounted back there, inside the cabinet. It's the device on the right and as you can see, it is completely protected from the rain while open and the roof covers it when closed:

I edited my previous post.

The modification is easily done on the SD model. Bill, recently did his (same converter that I have). I'll let him tell you what he did.........

I'm not sure that you have the same "old" converter though. The 2007 may have a completely different converter.

Thank you I have looked at it and it's a straight forward repair.......I started to have it replaced by the service shop ,but I looked at it and there is not reason why I can not do it myself and save quite a bit of money. It looks like when you did your install you had some heat problems with your unit.

This is what I used to replace the converter in my 2007 TM. Easy job. First, disconnect the battery and shore power then just remove the two screws that hold the old one in place, disconnect the wires and it pulls right out. You may want to remove the old one first to check the model no. before ordering a new one but this should be what you need.

I actually didn't have any heat problems. I just found that the initial charging amperage was much higher when I moved the converter closer to the batteries (cutting down the resistance from traveling that long distance through small wires).

Your batteries are close to the converter so this issue is far less.

The converter does create a lot of heat but they also have a built-in fan so it's not a big issue. Giving the converter more space to breath may extend the life of the converter but it really isn't necessary.

The Prog Dynamics converter is more high-tech than the WFCO converter. It is also far better suited for mounting in different areas. I just didn't want to pay BestConverter their higher price.

Don't make the same goofy mistake that I made. Pull out the box, like Ed did and throw the whole thing away. Then just mount the new converter on the floor, behind the panel door. I tried to make it look as original as possible. It ended up being a huge PITA and a bigger waste of time. Leaving that sheet metal box out is far easier and gives the new converter (whatever you choose) plenty of breathing room. Once you put the panel door back on, no one will ever see it anyway.
