Highlands Hammock State Park (Sebring, FL)
We just got back from Highlands Hammock State Park--it was a great weekend with our TM (affectionately named "Poppy" by our children).
This is Florida's First State Park and it is wonderful! It has pleny of gorgeous trails to "hike" and some of the most quintessential Florida landscape available!! (We hiked all of the trails in 1.5 days with 4 very small children (ages 5 and under)--some trails multiple times--so, you can too!) There are large, ancient and beautiful oak trees in the hammock areas with pines, palms and wild oranges/grapefruits abounding. The Tram Tour is fantastic--be sure to catch it!!
We stayed at a site up under some beautiful trees--completely shaded. The facilities are older and modest, but clean. (Except for near the sites in the 100's--those facilities are rather new.)
We happily and highly recommend a visit to Highlands Hammock!!
We are enjoying life!! Next month...Anastasia State Park and Old Town St. Augustine!! Let the journey continue!

National Geographic just came out with the 20 must see place for 2013. St. Augustine is number 18 on the list.

Plan on visiting all the Florida State Parks
Living in Florida, we try to visit a different park everytime we go out. We did have a problem at Tomoka State Park with one of the branches from the big oaks came crashing on the dogs pen crushing it. Fortunately dogs were not it the pen. Just be careful where you park under these big oaks. The park rangers indicated that some of the maintenance has been cut back since the economy slowdown. Our favorite park is Gamble Rogers since a few hundred yard north, you can take your dogs on the beach. All the other state parks in Florida do not allow dogs on the beach. Bahia Hondo in the Keys is also special to us, but you need to set up reservations. A really busy park with the snowbirds being here in the winter
.
Finally, one of our favorite places is the Skyway Bridge, just south of Tampa. It is listed as NOP, but we go there quite frequently and spend the night. The State Patrol, Park Ranger, and Rest Area attendants all say stay and enjoy yourself, but just don't cause any problems. The sunsets are gorgeous. Don't go on the fishing pier, but if you park on the southwest access road prior to going to the pier, you will have no problem. It is stated as one of the best kept secrets in Tampa.
Christmas we will be at Hillsborough River State Park and New Years, Fort Clinch (spelling?)

Stopped for the night at Highlands Hammock SP, never been here before. Won't stay again. Sites are the closest together we have ever seen in a Fl SP. No buffer vegetation between sites. TM barley fit the site. Bath houses are nice with a rustic outside flavor.

We camped there for three nights in mid-November. I think you are right about the buffer vegetation - there's not much in shrub sized privacy there, but the overhead trees provide some nice shade for the most part.
We usually stay in the newest section of the CG and can usually find a drive-through site that has plenty of room for a truck in front the TM at least on those sites.
Our only disappointment was that the tram was still not working. Ranger said that all the rain that central FL got last Summer had washed out some of the culverts so the tram couldn't travel the trails.
Everybody has their least=favorite state CG's. Mine is one near Gainesville, FL - it was trashy when we were there. Oh yes, and the county campground near Melbourne, FL where it has sewer connections available, but the hookups must have been designed in a drug-induced haze - just seems .
