True, but Lt. General Ushijima decided to let his enemy come to him v.s. the opposition the Allies experienced on the beaches of Normandy. Most Okinawa landings were virtually unopposed. The horrors would come later.
During my Army days, I flew several trips in Chinooks from Germany to the Normandy area in support of the annual D-Day remembrances.
